Today I have six words for you. Here they are, you ready? It’s your life, now live it!
Former Baptist Pastor, Joel Barrett, now 52 years old says he grew up in a “religiously abusive environment” where there were strict rules governing what he could and couldn’t do and homosexuality wasn’t allowed.
Formerly married with three children, he’s now divorced and committing adultery on his wife as he succumbed to his homosexuality. He goes on to say,
It’s not your parents’ life. It’s not your church’s life. It’s not your friend’s life. It’s not your neighborhood’s life. It’s your life. Now what are you going to do with it?
The problem is, it’s not your life. God is creator. God is the giver of life. And your life belongs to Him. Scripture is clear on this. When you rebel against God with your life, when you fail to seek Him and give Him thanks, when you fail to acknowledge Him, He will eventually give you over to your sin (Romans 1:28). This is exactly what happened with Barrett.
While he says that he prayed to God daily for “conversion,” the problem is that He was not interested in seeking God. This is the problem with moral fundamentalism. You are not taught to repent and turn to Christ, for Christ is your reward and He is enough. You are not taught that when you seek God with all your heart, you are given a new heart that desires to follow Christ. You are not taught that Christ has already defeated sin and you are empowered by the Holy Spirit to prevail.
What you are taught is a form of works righteousness–a turning from your sin to a moral life apart from the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit given to us by the shed blood of Jesus. This works righteousness ultimately becomes too much to bear and sin will always prevail.
What these people need is the truth. The gospel of Jesus Christ, that Christ alone defeated sin on the cross. Our sins were laid upon his shoulders. He bore the wrath of the Father on the cross while crying out, ‘my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He was buried in a tomb and three days later, God raised him from the dead, defeating death, and now forever makes intercession for those who would turn to Him in repentance and faith.
He promises upon your repentance and faith that you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, a new heart, and the power to live in obedience to Him in all things. Your evil desires will be changed and you will long for Him and you will be conformed to His image. This is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if inRomans 8:9-11
factthe Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus[d from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
