He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ –Luke 16:27-28
There is a video circling around of the Pope consoling a boy whose Father had died. The boy’s Father was an atheist. You can watch below:
It is hard not to feel grief with the distraught boy. Anyone can understand a child’s pain hoping that his father is in heaven. Despite our sentimentality, we must ask, did the Pope give proper counsel to this crying boy?
The Pope gave this boy a terrible false hope. Not that I am surprised by this Anti-Christ’s answer. He is a servant of Satan, the Father of Lies. Unless he renounces his evil ways, we should only expect the stench of death to come from his lips. The Pope talked about how God may be pleased with the man because he had his children baptized. However is that how men are reconciled to God? No! Men can only be reconciled to God by faith in Jesus Christ (John 14:6, Romans 3:20-25, Colossians 1:13-20).
In light of the Pope’s wicked answer, I have to ask myself, “what do you say to someone in this situation?” What counsel could you give to a crying boy worried about his dead father? Honestly, I do not believe there is an easy answer to this question. Hell is serious. It is not something to be trifled about and at least this child can sense that. Of course, we must look to scripture as our guide and our comfort.
Jesus tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man dies without faith and Lazarus dies in faith. The rich man is cast into Sheol while Lazarus finds rest in Abraham’s bosom. When the rich man realizes he has no hope of escaping the doom of hell he cries out:
Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
One thing is certain about this man, although he has no desire to repent even in hell, he doesn’t want his loved ones to be there with him. He is begging that they would be sent someone so his family might escape the horrors of hell. If this boys father has been cast into Sheol and is awaiting that awful day of judgment there is a strong chance he is crying out like the rich man that his son would hear the gospel and be saved.
The Pope has given this boy a false gospel. I would present this child with the real hope of faith in Christ. Ultimately God is the judge and the only person who can satisfy God’s wrath is Jesus Christ. Place your faith in Him and be saved from destruction. That is what his father would truly want for his son. Trust in Christ alone.
